Satguru Sri Sivananda Murty was born in the year 1928 at Rajahmundry to Sri Kandukuri Veera Basavaraju and Smt Kandukuri Sarvamangalamba. His father late Sri Kandukuri Veera Basavaraju was the last Zamindar of Urlam Estate of Srikakulam District. It was the richest Brahmin Zamindari of Madras Presidency in those days. He was a great scholar, devotee and a poet in Sanskrit and Telugu. Their family was well known for their liberal support to the scholars in the study of the Vedas, Sastras, and Fine Arts etc. Even the freedom movement got their support. Gandhiji visited their home during freedom movement.
Satguru Sri Sivananda Murty studied at Maharaja's College of Vijayanagaram during the years 1947–49 and obtained his B.Sc degree from Andhra University. He left behind the riches of his very well-to-do family and opted for a subordinate service. He lived among the poor people in the backward regions of Telangana, in an attempt to understand the ground realities of the problems they faced, ignoring lucrative opportunities offered to him in higher services. He retired as Secretary, Personnel & Planning (Administration) to the D.G.P by taking voluntary retirement five years prior to superannuation.
His spiritual path was Yoga, and humanistic patriotism was his way of life. He loved and appreciated honest patriots across religion and politics. As an individual, his contribution to the society is unique, outstanding and multifaceted. He offered clarifications and guidance to many in the related fields. He was a devout patriot. He extensively toured and studied India throughout its length and breadth to know the people and their problems. He interacted with many intellectuals and leaders in addition to common people. He undertook a variety of charitable activities. His special concern for the welfare and well-being of the tribal population took him to remote areas in Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat and Chattisgarh. Medical camps and welfare activities for the children were initiated. He also toured abroad to countries like Indonesia, Singapore and the U.S., and has many friends and admirers worldwide.
He was not only a voracious reader but also a prolific writer and a versatile speaker. To a chosen few, he gave lectures on the Upanishads, the Geetha, and Siva Yoga and also spoke on spirituality, religion and ancient systems of Yoga. The recorded material spreads over thousands of pages. He gave several radio talks on AIR for over three decades. He spoke on Bhakti, culture and patriotism in various TV channels.
He contributed more than 400 short and long articles under the title "Sivanandalahari" since 1992 to 'Andhra Bhoomi', a Telugu Daily, and 'Supatha', a monthly magazine and also to many other souvenirs, to educate and inspire society towards righteous living, patriotism, ancient culture and heritage. "Supatha" was started in 1998 under his guidance.
He wrote a series of articles in monthly magazine "Rushipeetham", on religion, spirituality and culture under the caption 'Rushiproktam', and also in other literary magazines and newspapers. He authored a number of articles on national issues like Internal security, black money, constitutional reform and Hindu polity, published in various journals and also published through the web. He gave prefaces to innumerable books written by scholars in academic disciplines, poets and writers of repute. His articles figured in various commemorative volumes brought out by prestigious organizations, Institutions and Universities.
His commentary on Kathopanishad was published as "Katha Yoga" giving in-depth yogic interpretations of the text making it very relevant to the sadhaks (seekers). This book is highly appreciated by the learned scholars of Vedanta. This commentary received an authoritative Srimukham from H.H Bharati Teertha Mahaswami of Sringeri Peetham. Guruji's interpretation of the life-histories of our great Sages, "Margadarsakulu Maharshulu" (in two Volumes), and more than thirty works of Guruji on varied subjects have been published and greatly appreciated.
He had read more than 13,000 books, even before he turned 33, on various subjects ranging from Literature (Telugu & Sanskrit), Indology, astrology & astronomy, history, religion, spirituality, science and medicine. His love for books was such that he maintained a personal collection of nearly 16,000 books in a separate Library building attached to his residence in Bheemunipatnam. He rendered free medical help (Homoeopathy) to thousands of patients.
He gave keynote addresses at a number of conferences like National conferences on Internal security, International conferences on Ramayana, Bhagavata and Mahabharatam, Thinkers Meet, and so on.
He established a recording studio in Bheemunipatnam to render free help to Artistes. Many albums have been released through this studio. To encourage an appreciation of classical music, regular music concerts are held at his residence.
The film "Gautama Buddha," scripted by him, won the Special Jury Nandi Award of the Andhra Pradesh Govt. for the year 2007. A TV serial "Manakatha", (the story of Andhras since pre-historic times) also scripted by him, won the Nandi Award. "Ananta Kaalachakram," a 13 episode series (the story of cosmos from the early stages of creation) was also scripted by him and produced by SVBC.
A team of selfless officers and friends under his guidance performed more than 600 Rudra Yagnas all over the country with the Sankalpa of obtaining divine grace for the safety of our country and preservation of our ancient culture.
Adyadi Sri Mahalakshmi Temple was constructed by him and consecrated on Vijayadasami 9th October 2008, by His Holiness Sri Sri Sri Jayendra Saraswathi Swamighal at Bheemunipatnam. Sarvajagathsakshi Ganapathi and Yoga Ganapathi Temples were also constructed and consecrated by Pujya Guruji at Bheemunipatnam. A Dhyanamandiram was constructed adjacent to the Mahalakshmi Temple. A sculpture of Dhanyalakshmi (5 Feet 4 Inches, 400 Kg in weight) was brought from Indonesia and was installed by him in the Dhyanamandiram.
A sculpture of Dakshinamurthy was also installed. A Yagna Sala was constructed in the temple premises. He established the Sri Mahalakshmi Temple and Charitable Trust to take care of the activities of the Temple.
He renovated old temples and constructed new ones at many places. He built community halls for poor villagers, and renovated government school and college buildings, provided new classrooms and labs with required furniture and equipment and chemicals. He also renovated a heritage police station in Bheemunipatnam, a vestige of British times.
Guruji inspired many cultural and social organizations like Sanatana Dharma Charitable trust, Andhra Music academy, Mahalakshmi Temple and Charitable Trust and the Sivananda Supatha Foundation. He inspired youth to take up social work and contribute to Indian culture. He was instrumental in founding I-FOCUS and guiding youth. Sivananda Supatha Foundation has been formally in existence since 2012, and has been focusing on carrying out work as per Guruji's inspiration and guidance.
Satguru Sri Kandukuri Sivananda Murty left his mortal body during the early hours of June 10, 2015 (1:55 a.m.) in his residence (Gurudham) at Warangal, Telangana, India. Guruji's depiction of Jagadguru Sri Krishna's departure mirrors his own: "He did not leave this world, but left his physical presence only." He has promised to continue to influence generations to come.
He was a great source of strength and inspiration to many important personalities who excel in various fields - culture, literature, astrology, yoga, science, politics, administration and defence. Former Prime Minister Sri P. V. Narasimha Rao, Former Vice president Sri Krishna Kanth, General K.V. Krishna Rao, Sangeeta Kalanidhi Sri Nedunuri Krishna Murthy, Sri David Frawley, Sri James Kelher and our Hon'ble Prime Minister Sri Narendra Modi, were all inspired by him. He prayed constantly for the well being of all mankind, our country and its culture in particular.
All those who met him obtained peace and solace in addition to guidance to overcome their problems. These are only some of the characteristics of this great personality.
Satguru Sri Sivananda Murty is a Spiritual Master of the tallest kind who lived amongst us. The legacy he left behind continues to inspire us.
